SUEZ CANAL DUES.

London, Feb 23.

It is urged that the time has when the British Govern- ment's influence should be used to induce the Board of the Suez Canst Company to bring down the transit dues to A more economic basis. That the existing scale is a burden on shipping trade, more particular- ly on British shipowners, who pro- vide the greater part of the Canal traffic, is made clear by the fact that the dues, at 6.85 francs, at which they stood before a reduction in November last to 8 francs, re- present on the average no less than 18 per cent. of the gross freights outwards and inwards, according to such an authority as the Liver- pool Steamship Owners' Associa-

tion.

How paradoxical the situation is in relation to the British shipping trade may be gathered from these few facts. Great Britain provides from 50 per cent. to 60 per cent.' of the ships passing through the Canal, and therefore the backbone of the huge revenues of the Canal Company. Holding as it does 44 per cent. of the Canal Company's capital, the British Government la the largest shareholder, but as at present the voting power of any aingle shareholder is limited to ten votes, that power in the case of the British Government is virtually 23rd Apr. negligible.-Financial Times.
