THREE GROWING NAVIES
FRANCE, ITALY AND JUGO-SLAVIA,
Contracts for 50 Warships.
A formidable increase in Medi-, terranean naval armaments is fore- ahadowed by the placing of final contracts for the 1930 building programmes of France and Italy.
Together they represent an in- crement of fifty fighting craft with a tonnage of over 80,000.
To these must be added the pro- gramme of naval expansion by Jugoslavia, of which I give parti- culars below, says the Daily Tele- graph's Naval correspondent,
It is remarkable that mutual |nava) construction on this Imposing scale should be in progress only
nths before the Disarma three r ment ference.
The French 1930 programme, al! the units of which have now been laid down or ordered, comprises the following:
Two armoured cruisers, La Galle- soniere and Jean de Vienne 7,500 tons, eight or nine 6.1in. guns, 34 knots speed. Six flotilla leaders-2,680 tons, six 5,6in. guns, and seven tor- pedo tubes. Six ocean-going submarines--1,560 tons; four coastal submarines; two Colonial cruisers, or gunboats; and one net-laying and mine- sweeping vessel.
Italy More Advanced. Italy's naval programme for 1930 is more advanced than France's, the final orders having been placed some months ago. It provides, in brief, for:
knots, eight 6in. guns.
