WARSHIPS IN PORT.

Seamen's Case Against were in harbour to-day:-

Ship.

In connection with the claim for wages brought against the 8.8. San Nam King by the sea- men of the ship, which occupied the attention of the Chief Justice (Sir Joseph H. Kemp, K.C.) sitting in Admiralty Juris- diction in the Supereme Court yesterday afternoon, the owner of, the ship, Lau Yat, alias Lay Pak-hing, made an offer to settle the matter. In doing so, he de jelined to admit the validity of the claim made by the compradore of the ship and his staff, and zoolies. With regard to the compradore and staff, Lau said that they could easily get back the security that had been put up consequent on being employ- ed, and suggested that the na- ture of their employment was different to the others.

Lau. also said that he could i not see his way clear to' agree to pay the ten days' double wages claimed, as he was not responsi- ble for the delay and he asked his Lordship to close the case as he did not want to pay large costa. He emphasised that he did not seek to obtain one cent from the charterers of the ship (the Lee 3ai S.S. Co.), but, on the other hand, he would have to pay some of the claims with which he was not concerned.

The hearing was adjourned until this afternoon.

GREEK SHIPBUILDING.

One of the latest announcements with regard to the shipping sub. sidica in the suggestion made by 29th Nov. the Greek Government to pay £2 13s. 4d. for every ton of shipping built in Greck shipyards above the minimum of 600 tons. This is one of the most interesting ideas to establish shipbuilding that has yet | been put forward by any maritime nation. Greece has little or no facilities for building large ships, and any development in this direc- tion will necessitato the laying down of additional shipyard plant. We should have thought that with so much surplus tonnage idle at 12th Dec. the world's ports there would have

been little necessity for Greece to have introduced such a measure, a measure that can only add to the burden of unemployed tonnage. If every nation in the world is going¦ to introduce shipowning as 20th Nov. national asset, it will hardly im- !
