NEW BATTLESHIP FOR FRANCE.
To End Nine Years 'Holiday
It is learnt on good authority that the 23,330-ton batile-cruiser for the French navy,
which the Chamber refused to annction last June, will in all probability be voted at the next Parliamentary session.. As wus ninde clear in the debate on June 18," the rejection of the ship was due to a feeling that the Chamber had not been sufficiently informed as to its technical fea- tures. This has since been remedied, experts from the Ministry of Marine having prepared detailed notes on the projected ship for the informa- tion of Parliament.
£5,500,000 Ship.
It is clear that a'majority in the Chamber favours the early construc tion of a battle cruiser, and will vote in that sense if it is satisfied that the ship represents good value for the £5,500,000 which she is testimated to cost.
The case for building a "reply" to the German pocket battleships has been strengthened by the laying" down at Wilhelmshaven of a sister to the Deutschland, which Whe Inunched at Kiel in the Spring. It
is evidently Germany's intention to complete 11 squadron of four Deutschlands, ench of 10,000 tons, mounting six 11in. guns, with Diesel engines for 20 knots and an enormous radius of netion.
France at present has nothing to restore the balance of power, her existing armoured ships being much too slow to catch a Deutsch- land. Hence the demand for battle-
5th Nov. cruisers.
If credits for the new ship are rated, it will mark the end of the 4th Nov. battleship holiday, which has lasted nearly nine years.. Since December, 1922, when Nelson and Rodney were begun, no capital ship has been laid down for any navy.
