A Speed of 41 Knots on Trials.
Admiral Sirianni's speech in the Chamber on the naval estimates was strongly coloured by the failure as yet of France and Italy to reach naval agreement.
Much of the Admiral's speech was devoted to summarizing the rival arguments of the partisans and of ponente of battleships and aircraft carriers. These arguments he illustrated from the experiences of the Great War and from recent naval manoeuvres, particularly the American.. One comparison wan very striking Describing the anti- aircraft protection of a 10,00-ton cruiser, he said that if Rome were to be defended in like proportion to its area 260,000 guns would be re- quired.
In the end Admiral Sirianni pointed out that naval pregrammes
must be influenced by accords, and that "the programmes for the com- ing year have not yet been definitely decided," but the implicit conclusion seemed to be that Italy would be compelled to construct bath battle- ships and aircraft carriers.

Crew of Sinking Boat Rescued.
The story of how the crew of seven of a lighter were rescued from drowning by an officer and men of the "Clan Brer, Clan Kenneth, is re- ported from the Calicut coast.
It appears that at about 11 o'clock on the night of the occurrence the cries of distress proceeding from a crew of the Clan Kenneth heard lighter some distance from the vea- sel. At the time there was a high wind and a rough sea, with a fairly strong southerly current.
