GERMAN YARDŜ.
INCREASING ORDERS FROM
SOVIET RUSSIA
According to German foreign trada atatisties Russian orders for German yards are on the increase. According to these figures, Ger many exported to Russia in 1927 24. vessels of the value of 740,000rm, in 1928 the number was 21 vessels valued st 8,050,000 r.m., and In 1929 the figures were 11 vessels' of the value of 10,030,000rm.
The statistics for 1930 are not yet available, but from the data to hand in December it is clear that there was no appreciable decrease in orders for Russian account dur- ing the year; in fact, there might bo an increase.
According to the December statistics the export of vessels (iron or steel) with engince rose from five units in 1929 to 13 in 1930, the value of the latter being 4,540,- 000rm, whereas the export of motor tuge for Inland waterways rose from one unit in 1920 to 19 units, valued at 2,580,000rm., in
1930.
cargo
The statistics also show that Ger- many exported 11 passenger and vessels (iron and steel) with engine for inland waterway traffic to the value of 1.310,000mm. In 1929, no vessels in this category were exported to Russia. The total value, therefore, of vessels export- ed to Russia in 1930 expected to be about 8,500,000rm., against 10,000,- 000rm., in 1929,

INVENTION TOO ACTIVE.
4
The calamity of this age, and one of the first problems to over. come, was that Invention
was too active. Too many things were pro- duced too easily, and everything was too cheap.
This was the keynote of an im- promptu speech by Sir Alan Ander- son at the annual banquet of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners in Merchant Taylor's Hall, London.
There were over 220 diners pre- sent in the historic hall, ladies watched the proceedings from the gallery, and messages from the King, the Prince of Wales (Master of the Company), and Sir R. Burton Chadwick (Deputy Master) lent special importance to this out standing event In the social year of shipping.
The Prime Warden, Commodore Sir Bertram F. Hayes K.M.C.G.. |D.S.O., R.D., D.L., R.N.R., was In
the chair.
