TYNE TRADE IN 1930.

BIG RISE IN IMPORTS FROM RUSSIA.

At a meeting of the Tyne Improvement

Commission at Newcastle Mr. Francis Priest- man, chairman.of the Finance Committee, in presenting the ac- counts for the year 1930, said the volume of January and February trade led them to hope that the year might be as good as, or better than 1929, but the worst fears of trade depression were to be realised.

They were entitled, however, to take some credit for having been able, notwithstanding the acute depression of the year, with its relatively small trade re- turns, to produce a surplus of £19.000 after meeting all their commitments and without allow- ing any of their equipment to be impaired.

Equally interest- ing was the conclusion which seemed at least to be implied in the paper that, taking all circum- stances into consideration, no one system of pressure charging is distinctly superior to the others.

Many who thought that the labours of the Marine Oil Engine Trials Committee were concluded will be interested to read the re- port, which will be issued shortly by the committee, on the motor ship Polyphemus, fitted with pressure-charged machinery, for it is the first time that engines arranged for pressure-charging have been subjected to trials by the committee. In this ship the Burchi exhaust gas charging method is adopted, and it now only remains for the committee to carry out corresponding trials on one of the latest Burmeister and Wain-engined ships equipped with their system of pressure charging.

STEAMERS MOVEMENTS.

The Ben Line s.s. Bennevis from Leith, Antwerp, London, Straitė, and Manila left Manila for this port on Monday afternoon, (April 20), and is due to arrive here to morrow morning, (April-28),

The P. & Ca. Rajputana left Shanghal for this part on April 21 at 4. p.m. and le due here on April | 24 at about 7.2.m.

In the fall in coal shipments the Tyne did not stand alone. It showed the largest fall of all the | North-East Coast ports, but it must be remembered that it was the largest coal exporting port of the United Kingdom.

It was perhaps to be expected, there- fore, that in a reduced national export, such as they had in 1930 compared with the excellent volume of 1929, it should suffer in ratio with its position. There were, however, some pleasing features in their mineral export trade. The value of their foreign coke connection was further exemplified in 1930. They received additions to their markets in Finland and the East and West Indies. Although they did not reach the 1929 record, they did not fall a long way be- low it, and he hoped that the 1930 volume of a little short of 1,000,000 tons, compared with a little over 1,000,000 tons in 1920, had become more or less stabilis- ed, with always a prospect of further demands.

The import of general goods was better than 1929 by 41,000 tons. The main items were pit! props and oats. While the port had benefited, the imports were the result of the policy of the Soviet Government, which had been the subject of adverse criti- cism. There was a large increase of pit props from Russia in 1929, but the quantity in 1930 of 134,000 loads provided an in- crease of roughly 150 per cent, over 1929, while Finland and Sweden showed substantial de ereases. They had also an import of 18,000 tons of Russian oats, against a níl import in 1929.

Bigger Shipyard Output. In, shipbuilding the gross ton- nage launched was 823,760 tone an increase, of 52,000 tons on 1929. While the number of vessels launched was smaller, the average size at 8,000 gross tons constituted a record for the port. In contradistinction to the Tyne's position under that head the average size of vessels built | in the United Kingdom last year was smaller as was also that of Swatow the world's building. The Tyne's proportion of the total output of the United Kingdom increased from 18 per cent. in 1929, to 22 per cent. last year. The Tyne oc cupied second place in the table of shipbuilding centres, of the United Kingdom in 1980, and had a larger increased output than any other shipbuilding centre. Incidentally the Tyne was the only port on the North-east Coast which was able to show: an in- crease on the 1929 output.
