DEPARTURES.
Mr. Alan Stevenson stated that. for some time past ships of the Anchor Line had given great assis- tance by using the beacon, and, as aj result of the tests given by the liners, all concerned were complete- ly satisfied with the apparatus. Its construction, however, was a long and complicated process. When the Idea was first worked upon, it was thought that in these days of gramophones and "talkies" little dimcuity would be found when this aspect of the work was approached. It proved otherwise, however, the synchronisation of the apparatus causing a great deal of trouble be- fore complete success was attained. Very little power is required, and a small size gramophone record sup- plies the speech.
The "talking beacon," which hasj been invented by Mr. Charles A Stevenson and his son Mr. D. Alan Stevenson, of Edinburgh, whoso family has had a long and world- famous connection with the light- house service, is expected to re- move many of the difficulties en- countered by mariners. A vessel equipped with the simplest radio receiver will hear the beacon "speaking," and will thus be able to know her exact distance from land even in the thickest fog. Every 70 avonds there will be heard the name of the beacon in speech (Gum-) brae); the three blasts of the fog Per 8.
