the American army transport, Captain Randall was frequently commended for his work, and on April 19, 1918. was given a personal letter by Mr Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, for his ebility as a navigator. Captain Randall later took com- mand of the Nansemond, and re mainel in that service until 1921 when he resigned with the rank of Commander U.S.N.R., to go into the merchant marine. Ilis first assignment was on the bridge of the America, later the Republic, and in February, 1928, was appointed master, of the George Washington.
While on the bridge of the Hudson in January 1922, he super vised the rescue of six men from the schooner Reine Demers, which was disabled at sea. On April 3 1923, when in command of the Pre- sident Fillmore he rescued the cap tain and five men of the schooner Rita M. Chuet, and transferred the crew to the coast-guard cutter Tamps.. Again on October 11. 1925, in a violent gale off Nantucket he rescued the entire crew of eight men from the const-guard cutter 134, which had been blown out to He is sea in a helpless condition.
