NEW SERVICE TO

STRAITS.

C.M.Š.N. Co. to Charter Ships for South Sea.

The China Merchants' Steam Navigation Company has started

negotiations with certain Japansa shipping arms to charter ships which will ply between Shanghai and South Sea Island ports, as a preliminary step toward extending navigation lines to pinces outside of China, saya China Press, Shanghzi.

The scheme was first proposed several months ago by Mr. Li Kuei- yuan, manager of the Foochow branch of the China Merchants' Steam Navigation Company, who ssured the Shanghai office of Buff- clent financial support from over- geas Chinese. It is estimated that million trips are mada cach year between China and South Sea porta and Mr. Li was of the conviction that wet of the Chia- eso travellers would take Chinese ships when they were put into their service.

over one

The Ministry of Communications was offered the use of certain Gov- ernment gunboats such as Hua Chu and Hun I, but aa these ships are rather old and unfit for the service, the proposition was droppelf.

The China Merchants Steam Navigation Company met diff- culties in chartering shipa from other firms than Japanese owing to the recent Government order pro- hibiting Chinese owned ships flying foreign flage and finally have turned their attention to the Japanese. It is reported that should the present negotiations

the be successful, China-South Sea service will be

started next Spring.

There will be three routes accord- ing to the present schemes of the company, namely, between Shang- hni and ManHa; between. Shanghai and Singapore; and between Shang- hai and Batavia and Soerabaya 311 ships touching Foochow and Hong Kong.

OLD AND THE NEW.

COMPARISON OF DOLLAR LINE'S FIRST AND LATEST SHIPS.

The last rivet to be set in the new $8,000,000 turbo-electric Hner, President Hoover, just before her launching at Newport News, Va., on LINER.December 9, conveyed to the hugs vessel a sentiment of the Dollar family. This last rivet in the hull of the President Hoover, the largest ship over built in an American shipyard, was fashioned from the ship's bell of the famous old steam er, Newsboy, the Arst craft owned by the Dollar Line, purchased by Captain Robert Dollar more than thirty years ago. The Newsboy was dismantled near Eureka, Cal in 1906, after a busy career in and out of the lumber ports of the Pacific Coast.

The news that Italian scrappers have bought what remains of the Turkish steamer Akdeniz will call to mind the old Norddeuscher Lloyd liner Oldenburg, which is completely forgotten these days; many people will have been under the impression that she went long ago. For she has done nothing since she was aaived from the
