REPORT ON A DIFFICULT

YEAR.

In their report for the 12 months ended September 30 the directors of the P. and O. Steam Navigation Company state that "the past year has been a dif. ficult one, and that in almost all the company's trades there has been a decrease in shipments. This depression, it is almost need less to say, has been world-wide." The report proceeds: "There are, it is thought by some, slight signs of improvement, but this is not likely to occur until the fin- ances of the country are re organised. It is fortunate that the company's interests are well spread, thus enabling the direc- tors to pay a dividend for the year of 10 per cent, on the Defer- red stock, free of tax."

Vickers-Armstrong's works at Barrow, gross tonnage about 21,000 each, will be fitted with turbo-electric machinery, with high-pressure watertube boilers. The accommodation will provide for 600 first-saloon pas sengers in single and two-berth cabins, all with a porthole open- ing to the sea, and 668 tourist- saloon passengers. The public rooms in both cases will be on a have space for about 8,000 tons generous scale, and the ships will

The ameliorating factor is that good rains have occurred in most parts of the country. In Queensland, after a period of drought, there are good prospects for farming and dairy produce as well as in New South Wales and Victoria. A heavy crop seems to be assured in all the wheat-grow ing districts in Australia. As re-
