Devotion to Duty. The seas were washing right quickly flooded. In consequence the ship became unmanageable, and I told the crew that they had, better lower the boat and get into it.

I remained on the bridge. By this time it was pitch dark. intended that the bont should re. main at hand, but when I went to look for it later, I found that it had been swept away by the force of the gale. There was no- thing left for me to do but to re- main on board. I went to the fo'c'sle and sent up flares, in the hope that they would be seen by a passing steamer.

After some time, and finding that my flares had not been seen I was getting rather despondent. Fortunately, however, the Bel. gian trawler Jeanne had observed my signals, but she could not get near to take me off.

"She manoeuvred to within e distance of not more than 100 yards, but was unable to reach me owing to the gale. She had been

The coastguards' claim that only warning shots had been fired was denied by Mr. Fitzpatrick, who said that thirty machine-gun bullets had disabled the vessel's steering gear and torn holes in the hull and super- structure. He said he would press his charges on behalf of the crew's members.

These figures were supplied by an official of the British Trawl- ers' Federation. They are to be explained principally by the "Eat More Fish" campaign, which was launched in March, 1929, with the assistance

of the Government. The advertising campaign, which was conducted principally in the Press, cost £40,000, and its effects were immediately felt. The amount of fish sold during 1929 showed an increase of 37,000 tons over 1928. This year 60,000 more tons have already been sold, and there evidence that the demand is in- creasing every month.

While considering what action it will take against the Good Luck, the Government has started proceed- ings against her sister-ship, the Mazeltoy, under an old provisions of the tariff laws permitting action against vessels which lack a mani- feat of their cargo.
