MOTOR SHIP OR MOTORSHIP?

the

On the occasion of the launch of Georges Philippar M. Louis Rollin, the Minister of the Mer- cantile Marine in France, referred to the new liners as Nautonapthes. We should find it a little difficult to translate this word into English, but the meaning is clear. Frankly, we do not like it, and trust that, like the aquare funnels of some of the Messageries Maritimes ships,

it will not come into general usage. In this country there appears to be a difference of opinion whether

the words "motor ship" should be

Possibly one word. the reason for this is, that accord ing to present usage a car is gen. erally a motorcar, but a vehicle is not always a motor vehicle, nor is a ship always a sailing ship. If this is so, then

the separation of the two words motor ship is logical, Difference of opinion occurs also in the writing of steam ship.
