FAST JAPANESE SHIPS.
S.
Japanese shipowners are in no happier a position than is the case in Europe, but they evidently intend to be in the forefront in any new developments that may arise.
The completion last month of the first voyage of a new cargo liner, for service between the Far East and New York, having a loaded speed of 15 knots, is a case in point. This vessel is one of six, and it is claimed that by discharging the cargo at Los Angeles, silk can reach New York from Yokohama more quickly than by other routes. It would have been quite impossible to employ coal-burning vessels with the same characteristics.

In other directions Japanese ship- owners are even outstripping their European competitors. They are now building a tanker to maintain a speed of 14 knots at sea whened by fully laden. Apart from these ves- sels, a number of Japanese passen- ger liners turned out recently are of higher speed than the steamers upon the same originally engaged service. Japan is, in fact, renewing its mercantile fleet by the replace- ment of steamers with motor ships of the highest class, and in accord- ance with, if not in advance of, the most modern ideas as to the re- quirements of sea transport.

LUXURY ON LINERS. Apparently those who are calling for less luxury and greater sim-ed at their risk into the hazardous plicity in the decoration of the modern passenger liner are crying in the wilderness, for the tendency is all in the other direction. Tenders have just been called in the United States for four passenger ships, and in these a similar system will be employed, and although the time has not yet arrived when the majority of new liners will be able to claim "every stateroom with a bathroom," there is a trend towards
a large increase in the proportion of staterooms having their own private bathrooms,
