BRIDGE.

JE NA NAPAPAN

THE

NEED FOR A NATIONAL ASSOCIATION.

A BOARD OF CONTROL.

[By Lt. Col. Walter Buller, C.B.E.]

In dealing with Bridge I have -often criticised American conven- tions, their methods of play, and their "ayatema." So long na wo rely on card seḥae and keep clear of "alunts" we shall,. in my view; re- main the better players.

In many other respects, however. we are a "back number." We are old-fashioned and unenterprising. It is not the fault of "the man in the street." There is no organisa- tion which includes him in its fold. and he is therefore helpless. I am sure he does not wish that things should be so, but until someone does something bridge politics will con- tinue to be conducted in the chaotic ways of the past. ·

Bridge is undoubtedly the most popular game in the world. How, is it "run" in this country? It is not run at all. There is no organ- isation, no "authority," no national

"board of control."

It is true that the laws of the game, drawn up from time to time by the Portland Club, are more or less generally accepted. This, How ever, is not enough. We must move with the times,“

CHINA

MAIL.

We are, therefore; one game up, but have lost on balance above the | line 300-points. I cannot proceed with the game at once, because there has been a prolonged "post-mortem” over the last hand. This was the one on which I lost the 300 points. I bid "Two No Trumps," my partner bid "Three," and we were two tricks "down." Here is the hand:

Y (Dummy). Spades-9, 6. Hearts-Ace. King,, 8, 2. Diamonds-Krave, 9, 4, 3, 2. Clubs-8, $.

Z (Declarer). Spades Ace, Queen, 8, 3. Hearts-Knave, '7, 6, d. Diamonds-Ace, King, 10. Clubs-Ace, Knave.

Clubs and B played the Queen.

A. on my left, led the five of took the trick with my Ace, then went for the "drop" of the Queen of Diamonda and failed. The Queen Subsequently I finessed the Queen of Hearts did not "drop" either. of Spades successfully. I therefore made only one Club trick, two Diamond tricks, two Heart tricks, and two Spade tricks the "odd trick" only.

Some mild criticism has been levelled at my bld of "Two No Trumps." Admittedly, It Is. "bor- derline. "My advice is this "When Yesterday the Loong Tai Hong in doubt attack." There is too sent a bill to the King Yuen Hong much undercalling at Bridge. It is to collect money for the medicine, the worst fault of all..
