The difficult problem which has confronted Mr. Whyte-Smith for the past week-that of not knowing what to do with a Chin- ese girl whom he convicted of stealing on Monday, July 7 last- had its fourth episode at the Kowloon Magistracy this morn- ing, when the girl appeared in the dock.

His Worship (to the girl): You have been almost a week in jail and I am sure you have not found it very pleasant. Would you not much rather be at the Salvation Army home where you have girls to speak to and play with?

The girl replied that she was afraid she would not be allowed cut of the home.

Returning to the grandmother. his Worship asked her to give a reason for her objection to her granddaughter being sent to the home.

The woman replied that the girl deserved to got, some work in the prison as punishtuent.
