'THE IMPORTANCE OF MASTERING THE MASHIE.

A Utility Club.

"Take your mashie, air!" is Camiliar advice, from the caddy.

Golfers who will take anything but a mashie for what are clearly mashie shots are not new in golf.

If some golfers to-day favour the mashie-nibliek, an older generation had at least an equal liking for the ligger. And a run-up shot with the no more ac jigger was probably carate than the over-lofted shot with a mashie-niblick. A pitch with the mashic has every chance of being better than either.

There are good, players to-day who use the mashiu for everything from a chip to the pin to an approach from 120 yards range.

Bobby Jones.

In the luncheon interval of one championship a year or two ago Bobby Jones took out u mashle and practised shots with it steadily for a quarter of an hour. He went out for his afternoon round with con- fidence restored.

That is why I have recommended novices to master the mashie from the beginning.

before been squeezed out and sent upwards by the lofted face of the club. Scooping at the ball is the fatal fault in mashio play. The hit must be downwards.

In shots around 50 yards, there is no pivot-an almost unnoticeable bending of the kners is all.

suggested sterling salaries would easily bear a little reduction. The Colony cannot afford to pay such salaries when its return In fees in Government Schools and its taxation is so small. Further is it necessary to pay such large salaries to men who often do very elementary work. Why not employ more local staff; this applies also to English Lady Teachers.

Keep the Body Limp. Take the club back with the left hand, and keep the arm straight.

If the shoulders are open and easy, the firm left arm will not hamper your swing through the ball. It is when you hit with tense shoulder muscles, as well as with a firm left arm, that you are inclined to force the club-head on to the ground be- hind the ball. Keep the body limp, except the left arm, which should be firm: The wrists come into ac- tlon at impart, but they should not

The First Mashie,

A mashic is easier to use than a mashie-niblick-the less the loft on e club, the easter is it to hit a clean shot.

But you must have a club with some loft for approaching by the "all-air route," for taking the ball from difficult Hes, and for playing stymies. Hence the mashle. The first mashie

at North was used Berwick half-a-century ago. The best modern mashies are little differ- ent from the original club. Other clubs-variations on the mashie have enjoyed their brief hour of popularity, but the mashle con- tinues.

Good Mashie Play. - It is the club that scratch golfers would miss most if they were com- pelled to leave one club out of their bags.

That is why I recommend every player to master the mashfe, and why I urge the novice to devote him- self absolutely to it during the first weeks of his career.

Good mashie play is the soundest which to possible foundation on build up a style.

With the mashie, as with other clubs, the way to get the ball up into the air is to drive down at it.

Hi Downwards.

In hitting 100 yard shots, do not make the mistake of taking the club back too far. It is an error to assume that the farther back you take a club, the greater distance you will achieve.

Bring the Club Head Through.

Distance is achieved by awing and follow-through and by "anap" at impact. The snap is Imparted by bringing in the right hand at the vital moment. The correct follow- through is a matter of keeping the head down until the club-head is pointing in the direction in which the ball has been despatched.

A good way to practise mushie shots at first is to put two balls on the ground, one several inches in front of the other, and hit them both into the air with one swing of the club.

Even better practice for letting the club-hend do the work is to play stymies. Place a ball down on the green, and by putting the club. head amoothly at it along the turf, notice how you can make the ball jump.

Mashie play is definitely a matter of providing a firm base, watching the ball, and bringing the club-hend through.
