REDUCTION IN 1919.
In consequence of the fall in the cost of living (at Home?) since the present scale of pensions for Naval Ratings: and Royal Marino “other ranks” was Axed in 1919, it has been decided that the present rules for computing long Mr. Philip d'Ambrumenil, chair- service and dirability pensions shall be man. of Lloyd's Insurance Brokers', modified, for new entries and re-entries. Underwriters, even more than shipowners, cannot help being ap- prehensive over the attitude of the authorities with regard to the withdrawal of protection to ship ping in Chinese waters where piracy is rife. A question from Sir Hasil Peto, in the House of Commons, elicited a reply from the First Lord of the Admiralty, in which after datalling the pro- cess by which Indian guards are supplied to ships from the Hong Kong police. It was stated that the supply of armed guards from H.M. forces would be discontinued after April 1 this year, although, apparently, the Indian guards from the Hong Kong police will still be available.
