War Recalled

The Philadelphia City Council has adopted a resolution authorising the purchase of Hog Island from the United States Shipping Board for $3,000,000 and as soon as the offer is approved by the board, will begin the construction of an airport to cost $8,000,000, exclu. eive of the cost of the land,

Hog Island, consisting of 800 acres, most of which lies within the city limits, was used during the War as one of the most extensive shipbuilding plants in the emergency fleet opera tions. It was acquired at a cost of $10,000,000. Vast amounts were aperit in equipment and it was just getting under full production-when the armistice put an end to emergency shipbuilding, Since that day it has been idle.

Negotiations have been under way for the properly for more than a yeas when Philadelphia began looking over qvailable airport sites. The city will trake a down payment of $250,000, carrying the balanco over a term of years at 2 per cent. interest.

Tentative plans for the development jof the airport call for a rail, water and cir terminal, for which the city has $1,000,000 available from loans voted last autumn. Except for preliminary surveys the airport layout has not taken definite shape. Heads of trans

ortation companies, however, have annauneed their willingness to co-oper ate in the development of the terminal as soon as the city acquired the pro- perty-Christian Selence Monitor.

DUTCH AIR LINE

Question of Landing in India Considered

Rugby, Yesterday. Capt. W. Benn was questioned in the House of Commons regarding the causes of delay in granting per- mission to the Dutch air service to Batavia to carry out a further series of flights over that portion on the route which lies over Indian ter- ritory.

He replied it has not yet been possible to authorities a regular service across India, owing to the Incompletion of ground organisa- tion, though some trial flights had been permitted. The question of permitting further flights was now under reference to the Indian-Gov- ernment.-British Wireless Service.
