DIANA BAY CREATES NEW RECORD
RACE TO BE REMEMBERED
Mr. L. Dunbar and Mr. W. Hill achieved the glorious double at the Race Course to-day, the fourth day of the Hong Kong Jockey Club's annual meeting. In following up yesterday's sweeping con- quest in the Derby, owner and rider gained further honours and made turf history at the same time-by lifting the Champions, the principal event on the card, with that never-to-be-forgotten mare, Diana Bay!
It was a Champions that will be remembered for years to come. Four of the five contenders had broken records within the last two
days and, bad luck for the majority of punters, Apollo, a hot fa- vourite, failed ignominiously.
Mr. Ho Kom-tong, O.B.E., had "hard lines" with President Hall, which was second to Mrs. Dunbar's Sitting Bull last year and occu- pied the same position this afternoon.
SIX NEW RECORDS
As expected, the record of 2 minutes, 32.4/5 seconds created in 1028 by Mr. Dunbar's Elliot Bay, was substantially lowered, Mr. Dunbar's latest acquisition, Diana Bay, being clocked in 2 minutes, 28 seconds! She could have done bet ter if there had been a Berious challenge.
Jardino's Adam also broke a re- cord, that for the once round, 7 fur- longs and 65 yards, returning 1 minute, '48.3/5 seconds as against the 1.52 by Glorious Rose in 1998 and by Gretna Green in 1916.
Up to the Champions, six new records had been set up, one had been equalled, and President Hall had also beaten the previous best, to be excelled in turn the next day. Truly a wonderful meeting!
Although it was Ladies' Day, the fair sex was not as strongly repre- sented as on previous days but there was no diminution in attendance or money.
The rain that threatened did not materialise and the going remained hard, on the very fast side.
On the average, the size of fields waa maintained and close, desperate finishes were the rule rather than the exception. In the sixth race, four ponies battled in a line up the straight for the first place and pass. ed the winning post very closely, In the ninth race three ponies went at it neck and neck for second and third money and there were other stride-for-atride struggles,
