Prince of Wales's Tribute to His V.C. Guests
HISTORIC COMPÁNY AT HOUSE OF LORDS
MOST ENVIABLE ORDER"
Welcomed by the Prince of Wales, who acted as host, 321 hold- ers of the Victoria Cross attended the historic dinner held in the Royal Gallery of the House of Lords on November 5.
Heroes of all ranks met on one common level, the request "Lounge suits with medals-lending a note of simplicity and com- radeship to the gathering.
Proposing the chief toast, the Prince spoke of the “Most En- viable Order of the Victoria Cross," describing it as the most demo- eratic and at the same time the most exclusive of all orders of chivalry.
V.Cs who had lost their lives in the act which gained the award and those who had died since were remembered by the Prince,
A message from the King spoke of the company as a remark- able gathering and sent best wishes for the future welfare and happiness of the V.C.s.

But that fact only enhances the value of the Croas, for It is a certificate a symbol of the possession of those qualities which, though war called them forth, are really the founde- 'tions of peace; the qualities of # cool head and undaunted heart, a fearless disregard of self, all these qualities which are summed up in the brief legend engraved on the Cross itself. And if any man thinks that "Valour", is only called for in fighting our enemies on the actual field of battle, he must, I think, have a very distorted view of the life we lead on this world of ours

I am deeply gratified to re- ceive the loyal message sent by you on behalf of those who have been awarded the Victoria Cross and are assembled, at Westminster this evening. Please express to them my sincere thanks.
It is, in truth, a remarkable gathering over which you are privileged to preside, for it consists of men of all ages and from different parts of the Em-1 pire who by deeds of valour have won the most coveted honour to which my' subjecta can aspire. I am happy to think that the British Legion has been able to bring about this great reunion, and I send to all present my best wishes for their future welfare and happiness.
