Unemployment And Overloaded Markets
CONFUSING FACTS
Promises Which Come To Nothing In Facts
The most difficult problem facing the country at the present time Is beyond dispute the problem of unemployment, writes Mr. Harold Cox in the "Sunday Times." It is a burden for the nation and a serious embarrassment for our politicians. The latter, to whatever party they belong, are all profuse in promises of a speedy solution. In practice the promises come to nothing, and credit is due to Mr. Thomas for the frankness with which since his return from Canada he has more or less abandoned his previous optimistic | outlook His journey has taught him that though Canada may give
a few more orders to Great Britain, that is not going to solve our unemployment problem.

Since the pre- war period there has been a great increase in the output of coal in European countries, but there has not been an equivalent growth in the demand for coal. The result is that, not in England only, but in other countries also,
ls being more coal produced than the demand calls for. The same consideration applies to our great cotton industry, Partly as the result of changes in fashion from cotton to artificial silk, partly as the result of foreign competition, Laner- shire can no longer sell anything like the same quantity of cotton goods as The used to be able to do twenty years ago, British, exports of cotton piece-goods are now not much more than half what they were before the
