Major A. R Miller, Commanding the 3rd Battalion, U.S. Marines of Shanghai, was the guest of honour at a dinner given by the officers under his command at the French Club, prior to his departure for the United States ~(Ah Fong).

Saved by a fifty cent flashlight, after twenty-four hours in an open lifeboat on the high scas, was the tale unfolded by Captain Lev Ozanne when the schooner "Whitney Oleson" landed the hardy mariner, his wife, daughter, and crew at Los Angeles, Cal. According to the captain's story, his vessel, the "Bretagne," sprung a leak enroute from Vancouver, B. C., to the South Seas, about sixty miles off the coast of Oregon. Twenty minutes after the leak was dis-

covered the boat began to sink. The Captain was barely able to launch one lifeboat and take off bis family and crew bofura Davey Jones claimed the ves sel. On through the day they rowed the tiny lifeboat until night overcame them. In the dark they kept flashing the pocket light until it was noticed through the gloom by the lookout on the "Whitney Oleson." The schooner hove to and picked up the lifeboat and its occupants, later landing them at Los Angeles. When The Lightning Struck!
