THE TALKIES

4.,.‛ · "

The talkies, which have been very much the "talk" of Home, will soon be coming to the Far East and, we hope, Hong Kong. Their production in the Colony and elsewhere raises some points of vast interest from the educa- tíonal point of view. Whilst it is not the happy lot of every Eng- lish-speaking Chinese and other Asiatics to speak our tongue with out blemish, it may seem to some of us far more desirable that they should speak with Д broken accent, or even the terrible "pidgin," than acquire a broad Chicago drawl.

The United States, more than any other nation, has realised the importance of the film as a vehicle of propaganda, and, as the result of American patriotic pictures, in which the heroes be-

The recent successful trial flight of the giant British airship, the R.101, should give feelings of solid satisfaction to all Britons. In the first place, it shows that Great Britain, although averse to the international publicity, after which Dr. Hugo Eckner went beg- ging, can produce as fine and speedy an air liner as any other nation in the world.
