THE IMPROVEMENT SCHEMES INDO-CHINA
IN HAND
The isprovements at Valparaiso which are due to be completed this year will make it one of the best equipped ports in the western hemi- sphere fully capable of. dealing with the ever-increasing volume of over- sea trafic The works comprise break- waters, moles, quays, and a long sea wall, as well as warehouses, theds, and up-to-date equipment for loading and unloading ships, The task now being brought a close is the extension cr the breakwater by about 70 metres, the whole being built in about 200ft. of water. It is formed of a mound- of sand and rabble surmounted by a wall of gigante concrete blocks.
At the nitrate port of Antofagasta the present contract is due to be finish- ed next year.
A special conimission has just been appointed by the Chilean Government to make a careful sarvey of the part with a view to ascertain- ing what further work is needed on completion of the scheme now in hand. This incades the construction of
å
large twarm breakwater, 1,460 metres its length running out to sea at a depth of about 25 metrck; the nther, 320 metres ng, in about 30 metres of water and running parallel with the const fren S. to N, the port being thus protected against strong S. and S.W. viols. A second mole to enclose the sheltering area completely will pro- tect the port on the north stác. Three piers, silings, warehouses, and customs stations are also being pro- vited, while the water near the shore is being considerably deepened.
