A Wrong Impression In his address to the jury, the Coroner said that there was a wrong impression in the Colony that the aerial escort accom- panied H.M.S. "Suffolk" beyond Lyeemoon Pass and that by the time the 'planes returned to the On demand Aerodrome, it was too dark to effect a proper landing. This had been exploded as untrue by the evidence. The flight had not gone bayond Kowloon Bay and when they returned to the Aerodrome it was 6.40 p.m. and it was not dark, although the light was be- Lieut. Watson ginning to fail. could see the boundary fence clearly,

When Lieut. Watson touched the ground in an attempt to land he was only about 200 yards from the boundary fence. He realised that he would not be able to pull up and he accordingly put on full throttle in an attempt to rise. He was too low to turn, and both his passengers, Sergeant Kent and AB, Gibbs said that to take off again was quite a feasible thing to do. The pilot had only two alternatives-to run into the fence or attempt to take off again. "I think it is almost impossible to say which was the right thing to do," said the Coroner.. The speed at which the 'plane landed has a great bearing on the ques- tion. On preparing for landing, a plane we learn, travels at 70 m.p.h. and at about 55 when about to touch the ground. Even after. touching, it is still travelling at 45 m.p.h. That means, with the fence 200 yards ahead, the pilot had to think like lightning and make up his mind with great speed. As far as see in this case, the was more an error of landing too far over. Squadron Leader Keeble said he might have landed 200 yards further back. I submit it was only a slight error of judg- ment. A slight error of judgment in flight may have very serious

Miscellaneous ·

The verdict added that an error of judgment affected the landing and the pilot discovered he had insufficient room and it was too late to take off again.

The Jury also added the follow- ing rider to their verdict:-

"That in the opinion of the Jury, although the extent of the Aerodrome is, adequate for normal purposes, the margin of safety is too small and the work of extensions should be acceler- ated as much as possible...

Canton is again in the throes of war, being invaded by the Kwangsi forces, who appear at one time to have been perilously near taking the city. Later reports show that the Kwangtufig armies, supported by gunboats and aeroplanes, have scored some victories.

Owing to its proximity to Hong Kong there is as on former occasions, a tremendous amount of interest being shown in the struggle, which will concern former residents at Home, besides numerous others with direct or indirect interests in this Colony or Kwangtung. The whole struggle is intelligently reported in the "Overland China Mail."

Shipping circles will be greatly interested in the report of the Committee appointed a few months ago to consider various aspects of river steamers, such as the engagements of

The master and mates, pilots, measurements, and so forth. Full report is published in the "Overland China Mail," which should be carefully preserved.

Legal, banking, and Government people have followed with close interest the progress of the suit brought by the Treasury against the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Cor- poration. The evidence during the week has been noteworthy on account of the searching cross-examination of the Bank's expert on handwriting. Professor Shellshear. Copies of the *Overland China Mail with the full report should be filed.

The bogey of motor taxation has raised considerable fear that the report of the Committee to the Government implies certain action. Considerable opposition to the project has been ventilated in the "Overland China Mail."
