MARKED INCREASE IN LONDON
IN A FEW YEARS.
EXTENDED FACILITIES
The ambitions of London to become i A great passenger port were revealed in a lecture to the Institute of Trans- port by Mr. D. J. Owen, general mana- ger, Port of London Authority.
He said the deepest vessels now using the port are tho steamers "Minnetonka" and "Minnewaska," which craw up to 37ft., that being also about the normal draft of the two largest vessels in the world tho "Majestic" and the "Leviathan." The dredging operations which have accomplished this great improvement, and which have been necessary to maintain the channel în this condition, have cost over £2,000,000, and have involved the removal of 47,000,000 tons of material from the bed of the river-

It was decided, in 1926, to build a new entrance 1,000 feet long, 110 feet wide, and 45 feet below Trinity high water, the old lock being G95 feet by 79% feet by 38 feet.
The largest drydock at Tilbury is now 69715 feet by 73 feet, and the new one will be 750 by 110 feet, with a capa- city for enlargement to a length of 1,000 feel whenever requisite. The longest and broadest vessels now using the Tilbury Docks are those of the Orient Line, arid-as their length-is-632 feet and their beau 75.2 feet, the neces sity for the new lock and graving dock is apparent.
The Tilbury Landing-stage is being: constructed in view of the fact that Londen bas been reproached for not having within the port special facili ties, such as
exist at Liverpool, for instance. in the way of a floating Rotter-stage, for the use of ocean-going pas
