INTERPORT ROWING

HONG KONG DEFEATS CANTON

FIRST SINCE 1921-

On Saturday the first Interport rowing regatta between Hong Kong and Canton since 1921, was held at Shameen, in the presence of a large gathering of rowing enthusiasts both of Hong Kong and Canton,

The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club defented the Canton Rowing Club by five paints to three after a keen struggle in which luck was somewhat in favour of the Hong Kong oarsmen.

The French gunboat "Vigilante" and H.M.S. "Tarantula" anchored on the finishing line, the judges being on "Tarantula."

Mrs. Hoffmeister, wife of the President of the Canton Club gave away the prizes on board H.M.S. "Tarantula" at the close of the re- gata, and in the evening a dinner was held at the Victoria Hotel, Sha- 'meen, followed by a dance given by the French community to Admiral· Stotz, to which the Hong Kong and Canton rowers were invited.

OLD MAN AGED 23.

New York. The New York police have revealed that a man has for three months been earn ing £20 a day from people who travel on the underground rail- ways here.

Thousands have known by sight the familiar figure who passed, bent and twitching ap- parently with palsy, up and down the long corridor carriages ped.

him 10s. a gross and he sold them, to the few who would ac- cept the return of their change, for 6d. each.

His day's work finished, he retired to his flat in 8th-avenue, for which he paid £2 a week, and in the morning banked his earn- ings.

Latterly he employed a valet and planned to retire as he had £8,000 invested in mortgages and was the owner of several news stands in Boston. He remark- ed to his landlord, "I will take it easy soon, as I get enough from 'suckers' here."

His £200 Bond However, the police stepped in and arrested him. In court he gave the name of Samuel Ansel, and said that he was the 23-years- old son of a well-to-do widow living in Massachusetts,

He was given the option of going to the workhouse or putting up a £200 bond that he would leave New York by midnight.

Cheerfully he put up the bond and departed from the city which had been his gold mine.
