NATIONALIST FORCES CALL A HALT.

Providing one of those rare occasions in Chinese warfare, when things expected actually come to pass, the Northerners who were forced into retreat between Tientsin and Shanhaikwan are now face with their former friends, the Manchurians.

Owing to a compromise having been arranged between the Na- tionalists and the Manchurians, the latter are entering spiritedly into the campaign. Fighting between the Northerners and Man- churians began on Saturday and had not ceased yesterday, when heavy firing was still heard.

That the Manchurians intend to keep the defeated Northerners out is indicated by the sending of reinforcements to the Great Wall. Meanwhile the Nationalists have called a halt and have left the hammering of the sorely-tried Northerners to the Manchurians, who were previously at the rear of the Northerners. The Northerners having turned to flee, they are now facing the Manchurians.

AN AGREEMENT.

Important Decision Declared Reached.

COMPLETE AND FINAL SETTLEMENT EXPECTED..

Important discussions took place yesterday at Geneva on the subject of the evacuation of the Rhineland by Allied troops. Lord Cushendun, who presided, said that while Britain was eager for the evacuation to take place as carly as possible, she also hoped for settlement of the Reparations problem. A Commission of Verifica tion and Conciliation was agreed upon, regarding which M. Briand expressed himself as being quite satisfied. However, Herr Mueller, leader of the German Delegation, said he was disappointed."
