THE NANKING RAPE.

AGREEMENT WITHIN SIGHT?

WIRELESS REPORT.

Negotiations With British Authorities at Shanghai.

GOOD PROGRESS SAID TO HAVE BEEN MADE.

An interesting British official wireless message is published to-day indicating that negotiations for the settlement of the Nan king Rape between the British and Chinese authorities are proceed- ing satisfactorily at Shanghai. The message adds:--

An agreement is now believed to within sight, From another British wireless message which was published in the "China Mail" on Saturday last it appears that Sir Austen Chamberlain, on behalf of Britain, is willing to accept terms similar to those accepted from the Nationalists by the United States. These terms are summarised below,

Some months ago Sir Miles Lampson, British Minister at Pek- ing, was reported to have declared that he would not go to Nanking until a settlement had been effected, and it is most likely that the present negotiations are being conducted, on Britain's side, by Sir Sidney Barton, H.M. Consul-General at Shanghai, probably assisted by H.M. Consul-General at Nanking, who has made his residence at Shanghai since the occurrence of the Nanking Rape seventeen months ago.
