PIRACY MENACE.

TOW BOAT CAPTURED BY BLACK LAUNCH.

The a.. "Kinshan" reports that as she was passing Lin Fa Shan, near Whampoa, a sampan from the A.P.C. steam-launch "Si S," came out with a message that a Chinese tow-boat had been pirated and cap- tured by a black painted launch.

The launch and its occupants dis- appeared up the East River.

Presumably it has been looted and the crew made captives.

.

Pirate Blasts Ignored. When the "Kinshan" was in the vicinity of the Tide Fole, a presum ed pirate launch sounded four blasts as a signal for the ship to stop and attempted to come along olde.

No notice was taken of the signal.

Shortly afterwards, an A.F.C. launch was met up with; this hav- ing on board a zaval gun's crew, and was observed to be in chase of another presumed pirate launch, but this craft disappeared up a creek and could not be followed.

This is a point worth note by underwriters, because if there is much hay being shipped across the Atlantic it would be well if they were to pay especial attention to the question of the possibility of fire and its consequences. It must be remembered that any highly inflammable cargo, which may re- COCHRAN'S FIGHTS. quire large quantities of water for

B. Cochran's even in those days of modern story of the amounts paid in some steamers and efficient extinguishing recent big fights in this country the apparatus. comparison is remarkable.

Writing in the "Royal Magazine".

for Ontober Mr. Cochran says:-

As an example of how innocent I

was in the beginning I thought I

could get Joe Beckett for £100 the Consignees of Cargo ex s.s. "Lt. first time I approached him for a St. Loubert Bie" are advised to fight at the Holborn Stadium. Not send in their claims to the Agent a bit of it; he began by wanting before December 26.

£1,000, and when I said that was Consignees of Cargo ex 8.0. preposterous he "came down" to "Chenonceaux" are advised to £600. Bombardier Wells, his op-send in all claims to the Agent ponent, got the same amount-but, before December 30. as it happened, the gate came to £3,344, so I did not do so badly out of that fight.

Until the recent Walker-Milligan fight £30,000 is the biggest gate I ever took at a boxing match. The fight was the Carpentier-Beckett one at the Stadium in 1919. Fully a thousand applications for 25 guinea tickets had to be refused be- cause we simply had not the room. (This was the fight which lasted 78 seconds),

The question of whether boxers. are really worth the money they get is often asked, and my reply [adds Mr. Cochran) is that it is all a matter of drawing power. When, for instance, Frank Goddard and Joe Beckett met under my direc tion £500. would have been a generous.purse for them from the point of view of boxing, but what they actually received wa Beckett £2,500, Goddard £2,000. The winner was to meet Carpentier, and this made the match a drawing card with the public.

Here is another W. G. Grave yarn: Dr. Grace disliked losing his wicket if he could possibly avold it. On one occasion he hit the ball high into the air, and, seeing the elder shape for a safe catch turned to the fielding captain, and said, "I declare the Innings closed," before the ball had time to drop
