FORESTS AND RAIN.

A DIVERSITY OF VIEWS,

It is my earnest wish that your great organisation may continue in the future to promote the advance- ment of science and the good of | humanity as notably as it has done

In the past.

...

This message from the Prince of Wales, cabled from Montreal, reach- ed the British Association at Leeds, and was sent in reply to one from the. Association on the termination of his presidency,

The influence of forests on cll- mate was discussed by Dr. T. F. Chipp, Assistant Director at Kew Gardens, at the meating in the Forestry Section, He quoted an expert, who pronounced definitely in favour of forests exerting an in- fluence on rainfall, and said they had a modifying influence- on vegetation in the Immediate vicinity.

Sir Peter Clutterbuck, who pre- sided, said the question of rainfall always had been a very disputed one. The climatologist said that where there was ́a“good' rainfall forests existed, and the forester aald that where the forests existed they made a good rainfall. Speak- ing of dew ponds, he said it was an extraordinary thing that by dew ponds and the planting, of a tree they could get a supply of water at the top of a hill. On a misty morn-

find from the tree a'continuous drip like heavy rain. It seemed, there- fore, there was something to be sald for the effect of forests on rainfall.

A member of the audience caused laughter by saying that, although the dense forests which formerly covered Britain had disappeared, we still had a damp climate.

The Chairman: I think the cli- mate of England is practically en- tirely controlled by the Gulf Stream, and that you would still have a moist climate even if you

NOTICE.

Dr. C. E. P. Brooks, of the Meteorological Office, London, said that, with afforestation, we could expect to increase the total rainfall by 2 or 3 per cent, and it might make a change in the direction of less frequent thunderstorm showers and more showers of the sonking type. A forest thirty feet high should increase the local rainfall The by approximately 1 per cent. most recent data showed that ap- proximately two-thirds of the rain- fall over the land came from the ses and only one-third from the land itself. He had seen it stated: that the replacement of forests by crops in the United States had In- creased the rainfall...

Dr. G. C. Simpson, Director of the Meteorological Office, said that meteorologists did not believe forests had any practical effect on rainfall. Meteorological pheno mena were on too vast a scale, and the amount of energy in a single storm was entirely out of propor tion to anything that could be done. "The by altering the ground. general public believe that forests have no effect on rainfall. It is a natural instinct of man, if he sees

A STORY OF THE CHINESE-

WARS.

The Peking correspondent of the "Observer" writes:

A very typical story of the Chin-: a thing which impresses him very ese civil war was told me by a busi much, to feel it must have some ness man who happened to be in effect. When he has seen large Yenchow, Shantung province, which forests swept away he thinks ít is just a little north of the so-called must affect something, and he thinks it affects the rain." (Laughter)

:

The Chairman said the discus- sion could be summed up by the conclusion that forests did not have much effect on rainfall, but that did not mean they did not have a great effect on water atorage and erosion.

battle front, There were many Shantung soldiers on the station platform, and in conversation they said they were on their way South to suppress the bandits, who wore operating between the two armies.

My informant had business in Yenchow, but a few days later re- turned to the station, where he was surprised to see the soldiers he had previously talked with. They had"
