· STEERING COSTS.

Steering & ship economically is not always the same thing as steer- ing her straight. It is possible for a helmsman to keep a vessel steadily on her course by constantly applying helm, first to one side and then to the other. however, results in a loss of speed through the resistance set up by the displacement of the rudder from the fore and aft line, and a loss of power owing to the steer- ing engine being constantly in motion. If, on the other hand, the minimum of helm is applied, and the ship la allowed to yaw alightly the gain in speed and saving of power more than counterbalance
