CAPTAIN GIVES EVIDENCE.
Captain J. R. Wilson, the 78- year-old master of the ill-fated 8.5. "Leung Kwong." gave evidence at yesterday afternoon's resumption of the inquest on Mr. F. E. A. Martin (Chief Officer) and others who perished in the Capsuimun disaster on May 9 last. He and he had been in command of the "Leung Kwang" for four years. The ship was a 398-ton wooden vessel regis- tered in Canton, and was about seven years old. On the day of the collision the "Leung Kwang" left her berth in Connaught Road Cen- tral at about 7 p.m., for her usual | trip to Kangmoon. There were about 150 passengers on board. She also carried some cargo but was not heavily laden. Generally the ship carried 300 passengers on such | trips, so that on this particular trip she carried half the usual number. The ship was in a thoroughly good seaworthy condition. The witness was on the bridge until the vessel cleared the harbour fairway, and then he turned over to the Chief Oficer (Mr. Martin) and went to his cabin. He left instructions with the Chief Officer to call him if necessity arose.
About 7.40 pm, the witness heard two blasts spunded on the "Leung Kwong's" Hiren and he went out at once. About 40 feet away on the star-

Kwong." Witness immediately saw that a collision was unavoidable and called to the Chief Officer to cut the lashings of the two lifeboats situated one on either side of the upper deck. Each of these boats could
carry about 80 people at a pinch. Besides the lifehoats the "Leung Kwong also carried a small dinghy. There was no time for the Chief Officer to cut the lashings before the crush caine. At the impact the witness was struck on the shoulder by something and did not remember anything more until he found himself on board the s.s. "On Lee."
