THE CHINA MAIL.

Liverpool, April 30. The reconditioning of the Cana- dian Pacific liner "Empress of Aus- tralia," which has been carried out by the Fairfield, Shipbuilding and. Engineering Co., is almost complet ed, and on June 26 the vessel will take her firat sailing from Southampton, via Cherbourg, to the St. Lawrence.

The reconditioning was n big undertaking, as besides the replace- ment of her old engines by Parson's geared turbines, extensive altera- tions have been carried out in the passenger accommodation.

The "Empress of Australia" was built in Germany, and was intended to be one of the units of the Ham- burg-America Line under the name of "Tirpitz". She was launched at Stettin in 1913, and was fitting out; there when the war began. A n result she was not completed till 1921, when she was handed over to this country as part of the repara- tion tonnage. Later she was taken over by the C.P.R. and renamed
