'PLANES SEARCHING FOR SURVIVORS.

Washington, April 24. Government aeroplanes are hovering over the flooded sections of the Mississippi seeking people who are marooned on the roofs of buildings.

Hundreds of negroes are re- ported to have been seen on the tops of houses and trees scantily clad and having evidently been without food for many days.

President Coolidge has request- ed Army engineers to proceed to the area to establish a relief or- ganisation.-Reuter's American Service.

The Turning Point.

Washington, April 23. Declaring Mississippi floods to be among the worst in the history of the country, President Coolidge has appealed for subscriptions for the relief of the sufferers.

The President refers to the efforts of the War Department and other Government agencies, but expresses the opinion that the burden of caring for the homeless rests with the American Red Cross.

Rugby, April 23. The King has approved the ap- pointment of Sir Charles Innes as Governor of Burma, in succession to Sir Harcourt Butler, and of Sir Alexander Muddiman as Gov- ernor of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh in sucession to Sir William Marris. British Wireless Service.

Sir Harcourt Butler has been Governor of Burma since 1928. He graduated in the Indian ser Secretary.vice, and his successor, Sir Charles Innes has similarly served in many capacities in India.

The construction of a new fireproof wing on the Banff Springs Hotel, Banff, Alia, which will be completed in May, is at present being curried on by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company under a temporary enclosure, which is heated so that it is never necessary to suspend build- ing operations even in severe winter weather.

The erection of this bow north wing, to replace the old one destroyed by fire last spring, is one of the two operations that will be carried or during the next year or so. The cost of this one operation wish approximate one and a half million dollars. The construction of a duplicate wing on the south side of the main contral tower will be commenced immediately at the dose of next summer's season,
