PROGRESS AND PROSPECTS

REVIEWED.

Statistics published in Genoa show the great progress which Italian shipping is making in international trade.. The share of from increased tonnage has 3,500,000 tons in 1913 to about 6,500,000 tons in 1926, while the share of foreign ships has de- creased from 11,948,900 tons of goods in 1913 to about nine mil- lion tons in 1926. A much more significant record of the advance is in the passenger trade. Dur- ing 1926 about 100,000 passen- gers, as against 42,000, were carried to and from Italian ports.

The restrictions of the imports of foodstuff, and particularly grain and frozen meats, as well as the British coal strike, have, of course, influenced the Italian tramp business. Italian ship- owners succeeded in getting good rates for coal from the United States of America to the United Kingdom, but, according to the statements which have been made to me by shipowners them- selves, such increase of the freight rates is not to be regard- ed as a settlement of the depres- sion noticed during the past few years, for expenses are eating practically 50 per cent. of the gross freight rates.

New Tonnage.

The remedy to this state of affairs can only be found in the building of new tonnage of low cost of operation. This is the general view of Itadian ship owners and shipbuilders. Comm. Sacerdoti, general manager of the Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino, writing on this subject in the Trieste Marinara," notes that while the new type of Parsons superheated turbine gear repre- sents the latest discovery of the steam engineering science, the

Diesel engine's propulsion offers still many fields of Improvement, Although it is not believed that pig-iron can be replaced entirely with steal in the construction of such machinery, yet it is thought that certain parts of the Diesel engine might be built in steel, and trials in this regard have been made by the Fiat Works in the construction of the engines for the motorship "Mauly," now by the Societa operated Veneziana di Navigazione a Vapore, and for the motorship "Maria," of the Cosulich Line,

MANY LIVES LOST.

Japanese Fishing Vessel Hits Iceberg.

Tokyo, April 23.

It is believed that, fifty fisher- men were drowned when their Vesret collided with an Iceberg early this morning off Southern Saghalien.

Another vessel with some three hundred crab-ishers on board has wirelessed that it is in dis- tress after encountering a severe storm.-Renter.

The "Rex" and "Dux" are to be built at the Cantiere Navale Triestino at Monfalcone and the Cantiere Navale Ansaldo, at Sestri Ponente respectively, and the speed to be attained by those vessels is said to be 40 miles per hour, but Comm. Sacerdoti, in his article, declares it will be far less.

"TJILEBOKT” SALVAGE,

Provided favourable weather con-

tinues, there is a fair chance of the Taikoo Dock Co. re-floating the s.8. "Tjilebeet," which ran ashore, at Ling Ting Island some days ago.

Closer examination proves that the vessel has been very badly damaged by the rocks but prospects have improved with the elements moderating.

It will be necessary to cut off the damaged part of the vessel prior to re-floating, which may be possible in a day or two.

·Agents of Chinese vessels are heroby notified by the Harbour Master's office in Canton that in future all Chinese steamers, motor vessels and launches must, carry' "Certificates of Inspection of Hull and Machinery". granted by the Navigation Bureau, the. Authorities having decided that Certificates granted by foreign engineers will hereafter be regarded as invalid.

In view of these experimente it is not surprising that constructions of tonnage has slackened down in order to enable shipowners to ADMIRAL ORIENTAL judge of the results of the various types of vessels built.

As to future prospects, so far as the liner trade is concerned, there is no doubt that the Italian companies have to face keen for- eign competition in the tourist trade.
