Mr. Bird came to Hong Kong! to join Messrs. Falmer and Turner in 1892, but the connect- ion of the family with Hong Kong dates back to the early days of the Colony.

It was in 1857 that Mr. Bird's uncle arrived in the Colony and he, together with another uncle, carried out the first survey of the City of Victoria and the Kow- loon Peninsula, the possibilities of future development of which! were then being realised.

The Hon. Mr. H. W. Bird has designed many of Hong Kong's best known buildings and they remain as monuments to his very considerable ability. It may also be mentioned that Mr. Bird also designed and supervised the erection of the Hong Kong section at Wembley.

With Mr. Bird will go the best wishes of many friends and col- leagues who have worked with him in the public interests.

A SUBTLE AND HILARIOUS PICTURE.

"POKER FACES"-TO-DAY.

Posing as his boss's part- ner, the better to "land" a poten- tlal big buyer, obliged by dontes- tic estrangement to take along a substitute "wife" to entertain the prospective customer, it was in- evitable that trouble ahduld lie in wait for the struggling and none too successful' junior in the firm when he discovered his real wife esconced as the new Secretary as a further "bait" for the un- scrupulous and muscular, "fish" that was to be "landed."

But this was nothing to the; fearful complications that arose. It would have taxed the optimism. of-á Micawber' to hope for any. thing less from the morass of trouble in which our hero was plunged than a man-handling that would maim him for life-not to mention an irretrievably blacken- ed character and the ruin of his business career.

But the audience finds it has reckoned without the equanimity of "Poker Face" and the interven- tion of a pugilistic and outraged "hubby." The wreath with which one is preparing to adorn his grave turns to one of laurels in the light of subsequent events. "Poker Face" emerges as the hero of the hour and the idol of his wife, not to mention the adulation of a grateful employer.

This is an excellent picture and magnificent as is the acting of Laura La Plante and Edward Horton, the "hidden hand" of the director (Harry Pollard) hasi much to do with its success.

"Poker Faces" is the feature atj the Queen's to-day.
