FAIRYLAND OF FLOWERS.,
The Cunard liner "Aquitania," which has earned for herself the title of "The Ship Beautiful, looked more resplendent than ever when, as she lay in dock at Southampton, she was a floating balroom for nearly 400 guests who attended the Hampshire County Ball, which was held on
board.
The function attracted pro- Eminent people from all parts of the county and from London. The dancers had the use of all the gorgeously appointed public rooms. These had been specially prepared, and the decorations, comprising hundreds of coloured electric lights, were arranged to form a network over the ceiling and trellises of the spacious verandah cafe's. A profusion of spring flowers, ferns, and palms converted the ship into a verit-- able fairy palace.
The dancers, who arrived. at 9:30, were masked until midnight. A band from the Savoy Hotel in London played for dancing

SUBMARINE'S ESCAPE.
DISASTER AVERTED OFF AN ISLAND..
Batavia, Feb. 18. Submarine K13 had a narrow escape from disaster in the course of tests which were being carried out off Christmas Island.
The submarine 'was at a depth. of 45' metres, but owing to the heavy swell it was found neces- sary to go deeper. This caused the vessel to lose balance, and it dived slantingly, bow downward, gradually arriving at a depth of 35 metres.
