It was just above Pan-pei-shan that the French gunboat, the "Alerte," came under fire. From reports we have received it up pears that the Northern forces and gunboats ceased fire to allow the "Alerte" to pass, and the Northern positions were passed without incident, but after pass- ing the Southern lines and when well above the Southern position a following machine gun fire was directed at the "Alerte," which resulted in the death of petty officer Lullien, who was shot through the brain, and the wound ing of another naval rating.
