Five men lost their lives and at least four were wounded in the attack by rubber smugglers upon the restriction launch "Simbang" Hoff Pulau Pisang, in the Malneca Straits, in the early hours of the morning of April 7
The captain of the launch, Mr. Willum C. Brown, who received En stab-wound in the back, under- went a serious operation in the General Hospital Captain Brown was the only European on board,, and will doubtless be able to give a more detailed and connecy- led account of the occurrence than the police have been able to: obtaini so far from different members of the crew. Apparently the crew of the Robahi numbered four Chinese and Jone Bugis, but these may have been more. The "Simbang" drew alongside the kotahi which had a quantity of rubber on board at (2.80 w.m., and immediately the smugglers swarmed on to the launch and attacked the crew with knives. The "Simbang's "search" light way smashed at the outset. so that the struggle went on in the darkness. The serang and a lascar were killed and another lasear is missing. Two of the attackers were killed, one by the captain and the other by the crew, The captain, engineer, cook and jermudi were wounded..
THE SMUGGLERS ESCAPE.
I will thus be seen that out of the "Simbang's" crew of nine only two escaped injury. The Chinese Venser came through the "fight unscathed, and one of the lascUrs jumped overboard and swum about until the smugglers left.
A launch which went out after the kotah during the night saw no signs of her in the Straits be- tween Batu Pahat and Singapore. Enquiries are being made by the Johore police, but the smugglers, assuming they got back to thei boat safely, could have landed any. where along the Johore coast during the night.
