-ABANDONMENT OF TREATIES. UNSUITABLE.
WHAT MUST BE DONE FIRST,
(Reuter's Service.)
London, July 9. In the House of Commons, the Labourite Mr. Johnston asked whether Mr. Austen Chamberlain (Foreign Secretary) would advise British initiative for the abandon- ment of extra-territoriality in China similar to Britain's metion to Japan. Mr. A. M. Samuel (For eign Under-Secretary) replied that it was self-evident the pre sent position in China as regards orderly administration, the safety of life and property compared very unfavourably with Japan in 1894.
The Government regarded as ira- portant regards China that the Treaty Powers concerned should act together in this matter. He said "we are ready to abandon the rights when conditions are suitable but they are unsuitable for so doing."
Belgium Interested.

Paris, July 0. The troubles in China were reportedly, amongst the subjects discussed by M. Briand and the Belgian Foreign Minister (M. Van der Velde) who is visiting Paris. It is stated that Belgium is far from indifferent to the situation in China on account of her big interests in the Far East.
