CORRESPONDENCE.
SERVANT REGISTRATION.
(To the Editor of the China Mail),
Sir, I am glad to see that the Chinese Registration of the Domestic Servants is being asked for by the leading European papers. I must say we need the Servants Registration very badly in Hongkong. Why do not the Government make it a law; they should have this Registration passed right away and not wait until the strike is over and all the strikers are back again in Hong- kong and at their work. Then it will be too late.
I know very well that some of the Europeana do not like it, pur- ticularly the European Peak ladies. When the servants re- turned to work after the last strike in 1922, some of the ladies welcomed them back effusively, That is the very way to spoil these servants.
I would like to suggest that not only the domestic servants should be registered but also all ricsha coolies, all tramway men, both the lower and upper trams, all office clerks and coolies, messenger boys, all Chinese,"No. 1's" and foremen in dockyards, contractors and godown men, market stall- holders, and shopkeepers and their fokis. Passports should be required from ali Chinese that
come
down from Canton and from other Coast ports, the pass ports to be obtained from the
British Consulates of these ports. If this is earried out there will be fewer rogues, vagabonds and robbers in Hongkong. It will put a stop to the troubles, and it is the only way that will do it. There should be some restriction on the influx of bad characters into the Colony,
Yours, etc.,
