CRIES FOR HELP.

YESTERDAY'S STARTLING ACCIDENT.

WOMEN NEARLY BURIED,

Partly Demolished House Collapses. The loud crash of falling masonry, followed by piteous cries for help, accompanied a startling accident yesterday morning,

Pandemonium reigned at of woman wedged in by a Cochrane Street (between Holly wood Road and Wellington Street) when a part of the prit floor house No. 50, which is the middle one of three tenements under demolition, collapsed: tak ing with it about a dozen women

coolies,

A reporter of this paper, who was coming into town along Hollywood Road, had reached the junction at 7.45 in the morning when he heard the crash and subsequent screams for help.

He rushed to the spot, and found the women in a terrible plight, a number of them being buried in brick and sand, some bleeding from the mouth and face, and all sending piteous eries for help..

The "Mail" man pulled away a few who had fallen on top of the others who were partially buried. One or 'two' scrambled out by their own efforts.

The crowd which had collected, and grew larger every minute with the blasts of police whistles across the way, looked on, turning n deaf ear to a request for assist- ance.

Presently two Chinesc.. volun- teered to help, and three of the unfortunate women were dug out in five minutes. At this moment another Chinese, who spoke Eng- ish, asked if he could help, and he was told to get assistance from the Central Police Station.

... His prompt response 8001 brought the Central Fire Brigade staff and the police. Two out of the three remaining women were Isoon got out, and it took some [little time to get the last one out, as her left leg had got firmly wedged in amongst the wreckage) This woman appeared to be the one with the most injuries.

She was put into a stretcher and con- veyed to the ambulance which had been stationed at the Welling- ton Street junction. Another four of the rescued were able to walk with assistance, and they were also put in the ambulance and taken to hospital:

The material which buried the women had been heaped on the part of the building

While in captivity, the mission- ary'a son found that the whole of the immediate countryside spoke in the most affectionate terms of the Gold Pagoda pirates. The Hatter had made it their business. not only to refrain from bullying the natives but also to protect them from molestation from other sources whether banditry or soldiery. The captive was also loud in his praise of the treat-- ment he received during his forced sojourn in the stronghold.
