o'clock on Saturday. Between five and six that afernoon, the manager looked around and nothing was amiss.
The burglary must have taken place between that time and half Past eight this morning, when the store opened doors for business.
It has been the custom for the manager to inspect the shop on Sunday mornings. This he has done for months, but yesterday he did not go down and the bur giar, therefore, had plenty of time to escape.
Even if the gang was large, the thieves must have been in the shop for hours, if not for a whole day, as they ransacked every de- partment. That they also were aware of the run of the place is, evident from the attention given to a safe, tucked away under a staircase behind the lift at the back of the ground floor. This safe was broken open and its contents, valuable cutlery, opened on to the floor.
Traces of rubber-soled Chinese shoes could be made out on the verandah (first floor) and on the ledge of a window opening out from that part of the main stair- case of the building (outside the | shop proper)' between the ground
and first floors.
It is presumed that the theives went up the main staircase, which leads to offices on the upper floors. Opening the window mentioned, they must" have climbed out on to the parupet above the lane separating the building from the old P. & O office which is now vacant. Pro- ceeding along the parapet, the theives climbed on to the first floor verandah overlooking Des Voeux Road,
