MT. ST.. MICHAEL.
LAND OF LEGEND.
It must have been the town of Mt. St. Michael in Brittany that fell asleep for a hundred years while the princess dreamed of the lover
who was to awaken her.
Nowhere is a more perfect setting for a fairy tale. The gray walls look down on the surround- ing sea; narrow, cobbed streets with unexpected flights of steps, and gabled houses overhanging,
wind their way steeply up to the great abbey, whose slander spire and statue of St. Michael crown the mount.
Enter the abbey and you, ate back in the Middle Ages. Here is the underground cloister where monks used to walk in the ninth century here the pillared "Salle des Chevaliers" where the knights of France gathered in their gold and purple to receive honours from their king.
You can see the great refectory with its peculiar slanting windows and stone seat where the reader sat at meals the lofty chapel whose arches are a strange mixture and Norman of Gothic grace strength; and, the great battle-

Everything in Brittany is old: Through an open cottage door you will catch the gleam of polished' wood and burnished brass from! some antique Breton wardrobe with spindle carving two or three hundred years old. The rich black velvet dresses, the hand-made lace and embroidered caps worn by the women are handed down from mother to daughter,
The peasants moving the corn in the fields still believe in the black dwarfs of Celtic legendry. But then. I, too, could believe any- thing, having seen those great lines of stone that straggle two miles across the windy moor at Carnac. There, to propitiate the gods of the forest, earth, and waters the Druids offered human sacrifice when the Roman Empire
was young.
It was a peasant who told the legend of the town of Ya., which was swallowed up by water be- cause of the wickedness of the king's daughter. So dear was the city to Flance that another was built to equal it in beauty and cally" Par-Ys" or "Paris."
