One day our beloved and witty Italian friend, the Marquis Visconti Venosta, motored us to Tivoli, which is about ten miles from Rome. We took our lunch with us and stopped at the villa of Hadrian. Laurion, in Greece, are very old. Xenophon, writing in 355 BC, said they were wrought in very ancient times." The Phoenicians probably began to work the tla mines of Spain and Cornwall, as early as 1500 B.C. The deepest mines of Europe are coal mines.. Several shafts are now being sunk in France and Belgium which will go to a depth of 4,000ft. Most of the mines of South America might more accurately be called high rather than deep. In Chile one of the big copper mines opened in recent times is entered at the bottom and worked up. The copper mines at Cerro de Pasco in Peru are about 1,000ft. deep, though they are at an elevation of 14,000ft..above sea level. The St. John del Rey gold mine in Brazil is the deepest in the world. It is worked to a depth of 6,726ft. Holes have been bored much deeper into the earth than mine workings-have "penetrated. The deepest hole in the earth is one in West Virginia, which was bored 7.579ft. in search of natural gas. France's Prosperity.

France's great prosperity is the subject of a report just issued by the British Department of Overseas Trade. It points out that the brilliant economic revival in France that ensued in the early months of 1922 has as yet suffered no eclipse.. The entire population of France bas continued fo. full employment, and her production has been' con. sistently retarded by dearth of labour. Reconstruction of the devastated areas may be said to have terminated. Damaged or de stroyed mines, which yielded 1,500 tons in January, 1919, yielded last May-over-1,260,000 tons, and the total coal output of the area will 500n exceed the prewar figure. Outside these areas the great trades are equally prosperous. There is, a constant stream of Immigrant workers. "The ques- tion of the exchanges," the report "has continued to play a BAYS, decisive part in Anglo-French trade." Great Britain and Belgium continue to be the most important customers of France. Wages. Jo France continue to show a steady upward tendency. Present rates are about 34 to 41⁄2 and even, in some cases, five times those ruling in | 1914-
