THE CHINA MAIL.
This year celebrates the Both birthday-of-one of the humblest. and yet most useful inventions, the ordinary safety match. During the 80 years of Its life it has grown at such a pace that to-day it is to be met with along every highway and byway the world over The forerunners of the present invention was the friction light produced in 1827 by a British chemist. It was a clumsy article, very inflammable, caused numerous fires, and also attacked those who made it with an incurable disease called phossy-jaw. The problem was to obtain the same results with the eradication of the harmful elements, To Sweden fell the honour of solving the problem. In 1844 Prof. G. E. Pasch was granted a patent for an invention which to day is known as the safety match, The invention was further par fected by the Lundstrom brothers who erected a small factory at Jonkoping.
