Crab-cracking competitions" of an exching kind are to be seen at the Zoo aquarium when the wrasses are being fed (says a writer in the "Daily Chronicle.")
One would hardly expect a fish resembling a typical sea perch, and scarcely 18 las, long, to bite through the shell of a crab, nearly as large as a saucer, but by means. of their strong_teeth_the_wrasses do this with ease, quite regardless of nips.
No sooner is a crab dropped into the tank than it is seized by a watchful wrasse and, through the thick plate-glass of the tank, you can hear the shell 'crack, the lucky fish meanwhile being chased by less lucky companions anxious to secure one of the clutching legs of the victims.

There is little chance of a crab escaping even should it reach the bottom in safety, for the wrasses search for crustaceans diligently in every nook and cranny of the. rockwork.
Despite all this, the Zoo wrasses have become so tame that they not only feed from the keeper's fingers, but allow him to stroke and pat them..
They are the most beautiful of all fishes found around our coast, being strikingly adorned with blue, green, orange, and red.

The hydrophone, whose normal function is to detect the approach of submarines, is a round metal water-tight disc protecting a micro phone of an especially sensitive type. It is so delicate that on one occasion during the war a succession of sounds Was too painful bear, and the telephones had to be removed from the ears. Comparing times later on, it was found that the noises, were caused by the explosion of depth-charges 46 miles away I... -
This device was dropped into the tank where live the wrasse-- boldly decorated sea-flsh with enviable appetities. There was a rushing noise which was traced to the apparatus for aerating the water. When small crabs were thrown to the, wrasse one heard a series of sharp metalic clashes clearly due to the snapping jaws of the fish. You saw and heard the feeding simultaneously.
