STUDENTS HIRE A LINER.
MAINLY SCISSORS LOOT. and women university students, "Eight hundred American men.
owing to the high cost of travelling on first-class ocean liners, have' chartered the whole of the second and third-class accommodation of the steamer" Rotterdam", in which they intend to leave the United States on a visit to England and the Continent early in June, under] the supervision of one chaperon," says the Daily Express.
The Rev. Melvin Kyle, president of the Theological Seminary, Missouri, writes from Jerusalem announcing that the region of Sodom and Gomorrah has been accurately defined, and the disco- very of graves yielding fine pot- tery of the days of Abraham. The Rev. Mr. Kyle declares that the biblical story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is fully confirmed, and says
that the legend of intolerable weather, in the Dead Sea region is untrue; In fact, he predicts the growth of a winter health resort there in future surpassing Luxor, Egypt, in ideal climate, romantic scenery, and even, archæological possibilities. Where do Elephants Die?
Mr. W. O. Horne (L.C.S.; retired) writes to the Field,-I have some acquaintance with the elephant jungles in Coimbatore and cle- where, but I have never heard of a wild elephant being found dead. Leaving out of account, however, my own quite insignificant experi ence, I remember that the late Mr. Saunderson, who knew more about elephants than any other man in India, stated that the finding of a dead elephant was so rare, that not only had he never seen the remains of any that had died a natural death, but also he had never met any jungle man who had had the experience. Moreover during all the time that he lived in the Mysore forests, no single pair of tusks was ever found. Of course, wild elephants must die some time, but the facts stated are remarkable. Revival of the Corset.
American "flappers" are griev ing to-day because of a pronounce- ment by the Corset Manufacturers' Association of the United States indicating a revival of stays." Too long, it is declared, the flappers have been rejoicing and the stout lamenting, and arrange ments are being made to-day for an elaborate advertising campaign to enforce the decision of the corset manufacturers.
Corsets will be general this year, they declare, but they will be light, dainty things of silk or satin, comfortable, easy to handle, and pleasing to the eye. The old body-wrenching, whalebone con- trivances, with a special arrange ment for attachment to the nearest

This is not the first time that United States college men have organised tours of this kind, and is really the outcome of the cattle ship trips run by R. H. Diggs, of Yale, who also founded the Student Third-Class Association.
So populär did the cattle tips become that Diggs arranged for the students to go in batches of fifteen in different steamers. By working his passage cach college man earned £27, had plenty of good food, a comfortable bunk, and something to do,"

A map of the world, drawn by Christopher Columbus before the great navigator set out on his voyage to the "Western Indies." which resulted in his discovery of America, has been discovered in the National Library of France by the Curator, M. de la Ronciére, This was quite an accidental find. TELEGRAMS. Mr and Mrg J. 8, Mr I. G. Scott
he is engaged when he came upon UNCLAIMED a packet of documents catalogued as sixteenth-century Portuguese charts. One of these was of Africa," but the Curator was surprised to note that it appeared to be the work of an Italian. It included an excellent' map of the Port of Genoa, and there was also a sketch of the Giralada, which showed that the map-maker was very familiar with Seville, The
of the name
Cape Verde Islands, was written in Italian, and a nute indicated that they were first discovered by 2 Genoese. M. da la Roncière soon became convinced that the
мар was the work of a Genoese navi gator who knew Spain well, and as the notes on the map clearly indicated the belief of its author that the world was round, corres- ponding to the ideas of Columbas of world geography before he set out on his greatest venture, the Curator was convinced that the тарная drawn by Columbus himself. A comparison of notes on the chart with all the known observations of Columbus has con firmed this view. It is obvious that the chart had been erroneously i placed in the bundle in which it was found, for it clearly, does not holong to the sixteenth century. Its date can be definitely fixed as between. 1488 and 1492, for it includes the African coast as far as the Cape of Good Hope, dis- covered in. 1488; but makes "no'' mention of America, which was discovered in 1492.
